Twitch apologizes for offensive Hispanic Heritage Month emotes
Popular streaming service Twitch apologizes for offending Hispanic and Latinx people when one of its initiatives to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month involving their emotes, failed disastrously.
What is Hispanic Heritage Month?
National Hispanic Heritage Month is from September 15 to October 15 with its main focus being to “honor the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans as we celebrate heritage rooted in all Latin American countries.” Its a chance to recognize the influence of Hispanic Americans in regards to their history and culture.
What transpired?
What happen was Twitch created a series of emote modifiers that would take existing emotes and decorate them with a Mexican sombrero, maracas, or a mariachi guitar. Social media users later criticized the images as stereotypical and not representing a wider spectrum of cultures and Latin American countries. Twitch later removed them and issued an apology to the public.
The Apology
The apology Twitch said was the following, “We launched these emote modifiers today as part of our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month but we clearly missed the mark, and we apologize,” the company said. “These were not an appropriate representation of Hispanic and Latinx culture, and we’ve removed them.”
New Emotes?
Where Twitch failed in making emotes for the Hispanics out there, Hispanics have another opportunity to have better emotes to celebrate this month. Where? If you subscribe to FrankLegend on Twitch you can have access to emotes of flags from different Hispanic countries and use them to show where you’re from on other livestreams. It is unclear if other Latino streamers are stepping up to the plate and representing their Latin culture for this year’s Hispanic Heritage month. We hope to encourage more creators to celebrate our Latin American culture and follow in on the trend to create Latino Emotes, created by Latinos and for Latinos.
Final Thoughts
Hispanic Heritage Month is a chance to learn about the history and culture of other parts of the world. While Twitch was unsuccessful in helping the Latino community show who they are and where they came from, it does not mean we still can’t do it ourselves. If you are looking for other emotes to show your appreciation for this month subscribe to Frank Legend on Twitch and rally for your flag emotes today. So we far we have the Puerto Rican flag representing us as well as the Latino Pride fist.
